Surveying His Kingdom

I rarely see any of our resident hummingbirds at rest for more than a minute, but this male Anna's was an exception, spending close to five minutes in one of the alder trees behind our back yard.

The series of photos I took show him looking to the left for a while, then the right, then up -- checking for competitors and predators -- and then directly at me.

It was an honor, and a comfort, to be in his presence.
