'Twere a beautiful day for a battle
I'll tell of the Battle of Hastings,
As happened in days long gone by,
When Duke William became King of England,
And 'Arold got shot in the eye.
The artist of these stamps issued on 14th October 1966, the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, is David Gentleman. He has designed 103 stamps since first being commissioned by the Post Office in 1962. His portfolio of artwork is enormous but, amongst other things, he designed the updated symbol of the National Trust.
And after the battle were over
They found 'Arold so stately and grand,
Sitting there with an eye-full of arrow
On his 'orse with his 'awk in his 'and.
