and through the wire...

Radio Radio

So last night my blip was of Matt Johnson and he is up here in Auld Reekie at the EIFF to premiere a new documentary about himself - The Inertia Variations. Since his last album in 2000 he has been doing film scores and a project called Radio Cineola broadcasting new music and discussions. The film is about Matt and what he has been getting up to.

Anyway, blah blah, accompanying the film is a multimedia art installation at Summer Hall and I was dragged along to it today. The blip is of the Tower Room, which had this radio tower and 4 single beds, each with 2 sets of headphones. The tower has this red lighting which lights up different parts of the tower. The idea is you lie on the bed, watching the lights, and listening to a reading of the controversial 1968 play This Story of Yours.

Now... this isn't usually my scene, man, but hey... I don't know what it was, I was not really concentrating on the words but they were mesmerising, and watching the shapes change on the tower... it was impressive... either that or I was sleeping?

Aye so the extras include a 4 screen room (I could only fit 3 in sorry) of clips from a 12 hour live broadcast of the radio show linking up artists and performers around the world. Luckily we arrived just as some musicians were covering one of The The's songs, and it was fab.

The third extra was a random projection of a guy sleeping on a bed and sometimes there was enough space to fit on the bed with him. Was this Ms H before or after the exhibition? You decide...

So in the past 17 years, I think I knew he was doing something online with broadcasts, but not to this extent, so that was interesting.

Ms H was out for another gig with her pals again, so rather than drive 40 mins home and 40 mins back, we went to see another festival film, Sweet Virginia, followed by a Q&A with the director, that was good too.

Looking forward to getting back to work for a wee rest!
