Off to the Shrine of St Cuthbert

Our bit of culture today was a guided tour of The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham, otherwise known as Durham Cathedral. We had an amazing guide by the name of Mike, who turned a 45 minute tour into an hour and a half and crippled my back in the process!

What a building! Of much architectural importance because of the style of arches apparently, we were told that the roof weighs, I think, 350,000 tons. Even if it was 35,000 tons it's still impressive and this explains the massive size of the pillars. We heard all about St Cuthbert and St Bede and were flabbergasted by the history and the details of the building. Quite awesome.

A free afternoon in the town today and all that spoilt it was a man in shades who spent the entire afternoon singing (very badly) in the style of Roy Orbison, Elvis, Long John Baldry and sundry other songsters of the 1960s. Unfortunately the tourists thought he was great and encouraged him!
