Rhingia campestis

Good to see plenty of hoverflies still finding attractive flowers in my garden borders. This species is always slightly comical with such a long rostrum enclosing its proboscis. This enables it to feed on nectar and pollen deep inside flowers with long corolla tubes and gives rise to a number of very creative common names - Pinocchio hoverfly, referring to nose that grew whenever a lie was told; Heineken hoverfly, reaching the parts that other flies can't reach; and the more mundane Common snout-hoverfly.
