Red admiral

Vanessa atalanta - what a sweetie. Noticed several of them flitting about today, both up at the allotment and in the street. They were warming themselves in patches of sunlight or finding the occasional flower to feed from. I see from the books that they were previously considered to be summer visitors to Britain who could not survive the winter - but are now thought to be surviving by hibernating in increasing numbers. Something to be said for climate change, I suppose.
