Wanderings & Witterings

Hurley

On Thursday I visited "Enduring Eye: the Antarctic legacy of Sir Ernest Shackleton and Frank Hurley" at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh.

I had been meaning to visit this exhibition for a while and was not disappointed. The story of Shackleton's 1914-17 Antarctic expedition is the stuff of legend and, although an exhibition of this size could never do the full story justice, the photos of Frank Hurley looked even more remarkable now that they have been digitised for a display of this nature.

When one thinks of the hardships that the crew of the Endurance went through, while on the expedition itself and after the disaster that befell the ship, it is utterly remarkable that any photos (never mind the men!) survived. Admiration and awe were the order of the day.
