A Helping Hand in Venice

Hopping on and off boats is an occupational hazard in Venice and we are all grateful for that steadying hand.

Well, we had braced ourselves for a hard landing after the fallout from Brexit and the plummeting pound but the sheer density of tourists came as a surprise.
It’s not water Venice is sinking under but visitors.

And it’s not hard to see where they are coming from: all those cruise ships disgorging thousands of people a day on to this tiny island.

We had left it until October thinking it would be quieter; far from it.

In the evening though once the bulk of the visitors have left either for the mainland or their cruise ships, Venice returns to its magical self.
