Grazing the Black Park

The cows are in the Black Park now.  There is an increasing amount of poorer rough grass in here now, an accumulative effect of having managed this field for bird and insect friendly grazing over the last 20 years.  Yes, the flora is amazing but it comes with a cost.

This is not a flat or even reasonably flat field so when the grazing is opened up at the end of the summer, the grass is always long but because of the terrain it is impossible to get a tractor in to top it, or make silage.

So we have to bring in the cows to munch it down.  It was good to see them spread out across the field, on hummocks and slopes too steep for a tractor, randomly eating the rough stuff down.  Long may they continue to do so.
