This box of wooden pieces and it's beautiful box have been in F's family all his life although he doesn't remember it being played. It belonged to his parents and he thinks that it dates from the 1930s. Unfortunately there's no board or rules with it so we looked it up on the internet.

Here are the details, it was invented in 1883 or 1884 and is a game of strategy and tactics, this version being for up to four people. We were surprised to see that it's still on sale so perhaps we should buy a game to use the board. I'm sure that the box and figures won't be as good as this one.
