This is the crocodile rock at Millport on the island of Great Cumbrae in the Clyde estuary

Painting rocks may be viewed by some as an act of vandalism.

It is when used for political purposes like the rock near the shore at Ardrossan

Then there is the ‘Maids of Bute’- allegedly painted by the crew of the ‘Vital Spark’, Neil Munro’s fictional Clyde puffer. The maids are rocks at the Kyles of Bute and were painted to resemble women by Para Handy, the skipper, to keep the crew happy when women were in short supply.

However, the ‘maids’ are not fictional and every year the rocks are repainted by locals in the traditional red and yellow
