The Edge of the Wold

In our 402 ascents of the Knott so far this year, quite a few have been in rain, a few have been with a smattering of snow on the ground, but this was the first with snow still falling.

In the early morning, the snow was fresh, there were few boot prints and everything was coated and covered in white. I was hoping to find the spoor of the Arnside Bigfoot, but there was no trace, just a few trails of roe deer, a squirrel bouncing across the ground from one tree to another, and here the pied fox, looking a little disconsolate and not quite so white against the white stuff.

By the time we came down from the Knott, the first enthusiastic children were heading up with their sledges. Gus surreptitiously retrieved a ball that two labradors were trying to find, and then he found something much more unpleasant which thankfully he surrendered to me when asked.

The snow soon turned to slush, but it was good while it lasted.
