B and I were in London today to celebrate our son, S's acceptance as a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and all the hard work that has gone into earning that. It's an august and elegant place and we did our best to dress appropriately but I was pleased to see many people for whom the suits and ties they were dutifully wearing were obviously not garb of choice. My sort of people. As S said beforehand, 'Never trust an engineer with clean shoes.'

And they served the tea in mugs!

The lighting was difficult and my pictures of his certificate presentation are not good. I practised with people whose surnames came earlier in the alphabet and my pictures of strangers came out much better.

Edit, four and a half years on: a companion piece to this.
