LIGHT AND SHADOWS (EP15)

I spent the last days thinking a lot about how we’ve been using light in some of our EPChallenges. And suddenly I felt the need of an approach to Experimental Photography that was a bit more systematic, a bit more didactical, of an approach that would allow us to not only experiment with our cameras but would also give as an opportunity to learn and explore some basics of photography while at the same time pushing our boundaries.
Photography is all about light, right?
I’m a photographer who loves strong colours and contrasts. In general, my photography is not very nuanced. What catches my attention are bright lights, dark shadows, things that stand out.
I’ll take this personal preference as a starting point for this new approach and suggest “Light and Shadows” as this week’s theme.
Focus your attention on contrasts between light and darkness. You are also free to explore the effects of artificial light sources at night or indoors. The only rule is: Try to make light or shadows the main actors in your photography. Draw people’s attention to how you used them.
Today’s blip was shot at 2PM in our garden, with the sun high above Isabella’s head. The only additional resource I used was a sheet of white paper held by my wife to reflect a bit of light on our cat Ella sitting on a windowsill behind Isabella.
(Those of you who prefer softer contrasts, don’t worry: We will be exploring that in next week’s challenge.)
