Port Arthur

Australias post popular convict tourist attraction!  An interesting window into one of the dark chapters in British colonial past that they didn't teach us at school. The prison was the subject of many experiments into how to reform convicts behaviour directed from London. Some were good- the creation of a boys prison separate from the men, teaching them the 4 Rs and useful life skills. Children were considered adult from the age of 9 and transported from Britain for minor offences. Those who repeatedly offended once they had arrived in Tasmania ended up at Port Arthur. The resuts of other experments such as the introduction of phsycological punishment , ie solitary confinement.  instead of physical punishment were shared round the Empire.   blip taken during harbour cruise, then we explored the solitary confinement blocks. Very sad place.
