A mob

Today we helped out at the Katherine Christian Convention, volunteering on the gate as people arrived. People come from all over the top end, some from remote Indigenous communities.

The white fella (as non indigenous are called) dutifully sat on the chairs and listened to the main speaker and other spots in the programme. The black fella wandered around, sat on the ground, and didn’t seem to pay too much attention until the performing and singing began. Then they poured in.

One of our trip leaders had signed us up for a spot on stage and hadn’t let us know until the day before! We had to learn a pigeon English song to perform and called ourselves the Melbourne mob. I think we did OK.

There was definitely white fella time (we were ready for our set immediately when they called us up) but in black fella time, people had wandered off and were late or didn’t show at all. Shows our different approaches to life. The kids who performed were adorable.
