Herculaneum

Once the coach had beat its way through the traffic of Sorrento we finally arrived at Herculaneum. It’s surprising to think that until relatively recently they thought no one had died here but then they found the skeletons of 300 people who had tried to escape waiting by the harbour.
The site is more manageable than Pompeii but still much awaits discovery.
I loved this mosaic from The House of the Shell . The recently discovered boat was impressive too .
In-tact wooden screens and marble seats and shelves in the bathing areas where togas could be stored are all featured of the preservation.
We returned to Sorrento and went back to the taverna we visited on Saturday for lunch .
Then we wandered down to the old port / harbour where fishing boats were setting off and one fisherman was mending his nets with a weaving shuttle ,
The Hotel is hosting a gala dinner complete with music this evening. A lovely excuse to dress up .
