Flood Damage

Symi is basically a mountain sticking out of the sea. The three side of the naturally deep harbour are steep, very steep. During the winter the island experienced the worst rains and flooding they have seen since 1967. Cars, motorbikes and massive boulders were washed down the streets, many landing in the harbour itself. The damage to the town was so severe it was declared a national emergency and the army was sent in to help clean up. And a remarkable job they (and the islanders) did too! This house at the end of our street is one of the few clear examples of the extent of the damage left. The little old lady who lived here had to be rescued from chest deep water but sadly died a day or two later.
