Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

How unlucky can a bird be?

From Captain David Gray's log of the Greenland whaling vessel Eclipse.

"June 15th, 1878. 80 degrees N, 4 degrees E. Shot an albatross - the only one, I suppose, ever seen here".

The albatross was a Black-browned albatross Thalassarche melanophris and is still on display in the Peterhead Arbuthnot Museum.

Albatrosses are normally to be found in Antarctic waters but very occasionally one gets blown across the equator and heads north.
