Sgwarnog: In the Field

Burnout

This is probably an odd choice of picture from a full day that included  a good walk along the River Wear and through the woods from Croxdale to Spennymoor followed by football at Spennymoor United.

The forecast had promised a fine day but it was mixed, some nice spells between showers but vercast most of the time. Having spent the night at what can best be described as a cheap motel on the outskirts of Durham I set off on foot up the Wear riverside path, further up river than the day before and a new stretch to me. I didn't have a fixed route in mind, just the aim of being in Spennymoor a few miles away in time for the football. In the sunny spells there was a bit of butterfly activity, mainly Small White and Speckled Wood.

I came across the burned out cars not far from the river just as I was about to turn toward Spennymoor. They are a reminder that Durham is a county of contrasts. And as I walked the narrow rutted track that was barely there back up through the forest, I could only wonder how the local miscreants had got the vehicles down there in the first place.

At the football Spennymoor Town were hosting FC United in the National League North and were good value for their 2-0 win. They are a club on the up.
