Back Blip

Another stretch of my Forth & Clyde Canal Walk completed today. Bus into Glasgow, then another out to Maryhill. My walk was to take me from Stockingfield Junction to Bishopbriggs - a walk of only three miles, but with a lot of variety along the way.

A short walk took me from Stockingfield Junction, where the Canal splits in two - the main route continuing towards Carron and the River Forth and the 'Glasgow Branch' continuing to Speirs Wharf, near the city centre - to Maryhill. 

According to a BBC report in 2012, "Maryhill Burgh Halls was built as a seat of municipal government in 1878. By 2001 it was derelict and placed on the city's buildings at risk register. Restoration work, started in 2009, has now created a modern public hall with office space, a recording studio, nursery, and a courtyard garden."

The Burgh Halls complex includes the former Maryhill Fire Station and these gates (pictured) are a 'nod' to that past.

Also on my walk today, I visited the former Lambhill Stables, now a Community Enterprise Garden and Cafe, and Possil Marsh Wildlife Reserve. These detours meant I missed the last bus connection from Bishopbriggs to Kilsyth and then to Cumbernauld and so I had to take a bus back into Glasgow city centre and a bus from there to Cumbernauld. Ach well, I suppose it was worth it!
