Day Three: France 2018

Backblipped 8th Sept

Quick stop at the supermarket and local boulangerie to get lunch and brekkie and we then headed off to the Alps. A long way to go but a drive we were both really looking forward to for the scenery!

Ate my completely delicious Nutella croissant for breakfast at one of the many picnic/service stops on the French motorways – so much nicer than the UK ones!! And carried on further south until we hit Grenoble and the foot of the Alps when the start of the serious driving started!!

And the scenery most definitely did not disappoint!

Stopped for our picnic lunch by the river (blip) and marveled at all the cyclists we were seeing – how they climb those hills and hairpins is completely beyond me!! And really couldn’t get our head around the relatively small mileage we had to go and the time it was going to take us (see extra) – however think those bends say it all!!!

We stopped briefly at the top of Col d’Izoard - and marveled again at the cyclists – and then it was the final push onto Saint Veran – so say the highest permanently populated village in Europe at 2042m.

Our hotel was quite lovely and virtually at the highest point in the village so the views were fab. A quick explore of the village (golly it was tough going on the knees the streets were so steep) and we discovered a bike shop that was offering tours of the area. After establishing that they were indeed electric bikes (phew!), we signed up for one the next morning and headed back up to the hotel for a beer on the hotel’s sun terrace – and our one and only beer on the sun terrace after being presented with the bill!!

Dinner out at the most hideously expensive restaurant for what we got – dinner at our first hotel looked like a bargain after this one!! – and then an early night ready for our bike adventure the next day!
