Nicky and her Nikon

Waterloo Station

I went up to London about half an hour earlier than I needed to be there as I wanted to pop into the National Portrait Gallery to see the Taylor Wessing Photographic Prize Exhibition*. I was kindly gifted membership by a friend so entrance was free. I did not have much time but I had a quick look at all the images and my overall impression was that the entries were better than in previous years. I will go back again another time and have a more lingering look at the images. The winning image was of course not what I or many others would consider to be the best image there, but then the winner always seems to be an image with a political back story.

Then I headed off to Park Cameras where I was having a half day course on getting to grips with the model of my camera. As I was the only attendee it was a one to one course which was brilliant. The focusing system is so sophisticated that we spent quite a bit of time going through all the various settings and options which has really helped me. In a nutshell I have to trust that Nikon focusing is spot on and I should use the automatic focusing using all of those 153 focal points more often rather than manually focusing which is what I often do. The tutor, a pro photographer, was very good and at last I have met someone who agrees with me that back button focusing is just another added complication and not the bees knees that it is made out to be.

I had no time for photos, when I came out Oxford Street was so busy I did not feel I had space to stand and take photos. I just headed back to Waterloo Station to go home again and this is where I took this photo.

*This is an annual competition of portrait photography that is very prestigious
