Happy New Year!

Once more on Copacabana Beach for the fireworks. Having seen Sydney and Paris and London on the TV, I think what distinguishes the Copacabana display is not only its length (14 minutes this year) but breadth . . . a whole sweeping bay with seven cruise ships gaily lit as a backdrop.

A jaw dropping finale brought an ovation from the three million gathered on the shore. And then the weight of the black, silent sky.
