Face Off

It's amazing what you find when you're not even looking. Hidden away close to home, but in a rather secret little spot, is this engraving in the gritstone, no hint to its origin or as to what it's supposed to signify.

I'll borrow it today to represent Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn, two old elephants, facing off, neither prepared to budge for fear of causing irreparable rifts in their own parties.

Parliament is wonderful theatre but the vast majority of the debate is pointless. There is a great deal of very civilised talking but not a lot of listening or accommodation to different points of view. The whole process just serves to encourage confrontation and further entrenchment.

My interest is waning.

Trying to be agnostic as to the final outcome, what I really hope for is that out of this debacle will emerge some new kind of consensus politics that might serve as a model going forward. Something needs to change at Westminster. I'm not holding my breath.
