Mine Host

Today we attended a Host lunch in Edinburgh.

This is a scheme we have belonged to for over 25 years but we rarely get the chance to meet other hosts so today was rather special. We all took along a dish for the buffet lunch.

We shared stories about our students who come from all over the world though most were Chinese. One woman was on her way to India for a wedding of one of her former students and like all Indian weddings it would go on for three days so she had to buy three outfits for the occasion (try buying summer wedding clothes in Scotland in the depth of winter!).
Another host had been out to China for a wedding. ( We went to Berlin once for the wedding of one of our students.)

There is a dire shortage of families prepared to host while at the same time there is an ever increasing number of students who want to experience life in this country away from campus.

It is a scheme I would heartily endorse.
Over the years we have had students from India, China, Uganda, Syria, America, France, Belgium, Germany, Ghana, Kenya, Malaysia, Ukraine, and they have given us a wonderful insight into their cultures.

What does it involve? Basically, you have a student (or two) for a long weekend. That's all.
