Dr Derek

We were invited to an awards dinner in Manchester tonight hosted by English Disability sport - a really great night which looked back at the Paralympics as well as honouring those involved in the sport as volunteers and of course the up and coming athletes of the future. Dr Derek Martin was at our table and thought he was coming to hand out some prizes - instead he was to be given a lifetime achievement award (named in honour of paralympic photographer Graham Bull).

Derek is hanging up his stethoscope as Team GB team doctor - I'd heard a lot about him but I'd never met him and I immediately understood why he is so loved by everyone involved in the sport. You couldn't meet a more unassuming and caring man. He's a guitarist and at 65, he's off to indulge himself as a rock star! I'm looking forward to rocking with the doc at the Edinburgh Festival in 2013.
