From the Rooftops: the Art of John Sloan

Penn State's Palmer Museum has recently opened a major new exhibit. It is called "From the Rooftops: John Sloan and the Art of a New Urban Space," and it will be available through May 12. Entrance to the museum is free, and the galleries are open from Tuesday through Sunday.

Of course, I had to check out the new exhibit, and what fun it is! I shall have to go back for another look (or two, or three), but for now, here are two of American Ashcan School painter John Sloan's works from that exhibit.

The painting above is called A Roof in Chelsea, New York. It might be my favorite image in the exhibit; I'm still deciding. Only up close can you see the lines of color on all of those birds in the upper right. The image has a very breezy feel. If the building itself had not been included, I'd never have guessed this scene was taking place on a rooftop!

The painting in the extras is called Sunday, Women Drying Their Hair. It has a relaxed air to it; it is a very intimate scene for what might qualify as a rather public space. The juxtaposition of public/private space is interesting to see.

My soundtrack song is for the image above, and so here is Joni Mitchell with Chelsea Morning.
