Sapphire Coasting

Another day when we didn’t move on much, just motoring down the coastal route. Seems there are two very distinct sorts of town here - those that are just commonplace, despite their setting and those that are a bit more than that. And often it’s the presence of that breed, the old hippy, that is the key to how to find the latter. Sadly the guidebooks and maps just don’t sniff it out. So after Narooma last night it was a joy to chance upon Bermagui to stock up on essentials like carob covered ginger sweets. Then a stop at Tathra to see the historic wharf (!) and on to check in to a Motel at Eden before going and lounging on the beach awhile watching the surfers.
Asking after eateries the motel manager’s missus said, there’s the Fisherman’s Mission across the street and a Chinese next door. Ho hum I thought and did some googling, and there a few hundred yards walk away, down at the working fishing port, was a just great wee place called Drift. Next to the Port Police and cool as the proverbial. This really is oyster country. Have I mentioned that?
But then a bit of news - seems Victoria is currently plagued by dozens of out of control wildfires and the main Princes Highway route to Melbourne is closed. Errrrrummm
