Against All Odds, a Tree Grows from the Stone

One of our favorite restaurants, Couch's in McAlevy's Fort, is for sale. Motivated by fears of losing access to some of our favorite meals, my husband and I are trying to visit more often. On this day, we had a great lunch there: hot turkey sandwich meal for me, hot roast beef sandwich meal for him.

And then we headed for Greenwood Furnace to go on some short hikes. We parked the car near a little pavilion along the lake shore trail and walked all around. The light was beautiful and the sky was blue. There wasn't a single cloud in the sky. But the wind was something fierce!

The trees are still bare, this early in the spring, and they were making marvelous tree-shadows everywhere. It was like visual poetry, in which the trees were words, and the shadows were their rhymes.

And then, before we left, we walked over to the spillway and had a good, long look around. There are rocks along the top, and I suddenly realized there was something living in one. I stopped and took a picture: against all odds, a tree was growing from a hole in the stone.

The soundtrack is Phil Collins, with Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now).
