The Edge of the Wold

Savanna sunset.....

....I can dream. Sycamore trees growing on limestone pavement on Clawthorpe Fell as the sun dipped towards the cloud bank over the Irish Sea. It was strange light with the view home to Warton Crag and Arnside Knott very indistinct.

Gus and I went in search of our first wheatear of the season, but we weren't in luck. It was still light as we headed home just before 7pm, and the clocks haven't sprung forward yet. Better than my first wheatear would have been though (as there will undoubtedly be many birds to see later in the Spring), was a pair of little owls on a derelict barn roof. A bird that I didn't see at all in 2018, and one that is becoming increasingly scarce in Cumbria and England as a whole. There is an interesting story to tell of the little owl's decline, but I shall save that in the hope that I might get a photograph of one or both of them.
