Lost in the Woods

After leaving Mum, I took a long route home via the Sevenoaks Wildlife Nature Reserve.  This was originally the site of a large-scale industrial gravel extraction that created a number of pits which gradually flooded to create five large lakes. Excavation ended in the 1970s when it was converted to the Site of Special Interest seen today.

Wandering around the paths one can still see evidence of its industrial past with remains of wharf where the gravel was unloaded, and appararently some of the barges were submerged in the lakes.  I spotted this winding gear on the remains of an old concrete wharf - it's easier to see in mono - in the original colour version it was practically invisible.

Of course, no visit should be complete without seeing some birds, and one of the last and the best shots of the day was of a heron, in extras
