Trail House

We woke up to rain this morning. This is not unheard of, but highly unusual (and highly dispiriting) in mid-May. I suppose I would rather have rain than the cloudy, drizzling skies we’ve had for a month, but really, it’s supposed to be getting warmer, not pouring rain! And this is not just May showers. It’s pouring!

OilMan put on his hat and his scarf and his parka, found his umbrella and put on Ozzie’s leash. They got as far as the front door but when OilMan opened it Ozzie took one look and plopped down on the floor refusing to budge.

I made it to class but once home I was feeling much like Ozzie. OilMan finally convinced me to go to Trail House for a hot dog, a weakness we both give in to as long as we don’t have the opportunity to do it very often. It turned out to be delicious and garlicky with lots of fresh condiments. We could be in trouble...

We both value this comfortable, pleasant place to hang out, so I took this picture of the bicycle repair part at the back of the shop and the coffee counter on the left. We sat on stools at the front window and stared glumly out into the rainy street.

I read in the paper that a privately funded exploration team found plastic at the bottom of the Marianna’s Trench. The speculation was that it ‘might be Candy wrappers’...as if that weren’t bad enough, the plastic, whatever it is, had preceded humans to one of the last unexplored places on earth...

What have we done to our poor planet? And how are we ever going to fix it?
