RIP Hincaster Branch Line

A flat walk was needed today because too much hilly walking with poles  in Orkney has resulted in sore shoulders. A neighbour suggested a riverside walk which I was excited to find included a bit of dismantled railway that I have wanted to explore for a while. Built between Arnside and Hincaster as a branch of the Furness railway to transport iron ore to Barrow in Furness, it opened in 1876 and provided a passenger service from Grange over Sands to Kendal.  It closed in 1942. My effort to walk along it was thwarted by some waste water treatment works. I will get out my OS map and attack from the otherside. Good old Google says its an unoffial bridal path.  This view from the railway embankment looks  towards the Kent estuary
