What is creativity?

Can computers ever be creative?
Well, artificial intelligence, the new kid on the block, has the potential to write paint and think.
So says Marcus Du Sautoy professor of mathematics at Oxford university speaking at the Hay Festival today
He showed examples of art created by AI and asked the audience to select which was the  real Rembrandt and one generated by AI.
They chose the latter.
He told the story of how they provided a series of artworks to an audience at a major European art exhibition. Half were generated by AI. Again the audience preferred the AI images.
But AI is less successful in writing a novel.
So ends another challenging day at Hay.
