Day 21: around Barra (1)

We have now added Vatersay as the tenth and final island to the list for this holiday. The others are Lewis, Harris, Berneray, North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula, South Uist, Eriskay, and Barra. My blip shows sea pink (thrift, armeria maritima, bees' ruby) growing on the cliffs on the Atlantic side of the tombolo. It was another lovely sunny afternoon, although I may have to put in a complaint because we were forced to share our beach today ;-)

We've visited Vatersay a couple of times before in 2001 (on single bikes) and 2009 (on our tandem) so I knew that my suggestion that we cycle there this afternoon would involve a couple of very steep climbs. I had, however, forgotten just how demanding they are. Snaefell and Livresse be warned as you prepare for your rides up the Hebridean Way later in the summer!

We also made two stops for refreshments over the course of our day out: first in Castlebay at the Kisimul café for lunch, and then at the community café on Vatersay for tea/coffee and cake (yes, tea/coffee and cake - our first of the whole holiday).

There was no time for Scrabble today. Instead Mr hazelh and I finished our books after dinner. These were (1) a history of Star Trek and (2) a retelling of The Iliad. There will be no prizes for correctly assigning the books to each reader.

Exercise today: 13.3 miles of cycling (some rather strenuous).
