Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Grateful Dead - Little Red Rooster (recorded live, 31 October 1980, Radio City Music Hall,  New York NY)
Jerry Garcia (guitar, vocals), Bob Weir (guitar, vocals), Phil Lesh (bass, vocals),  Brent Mydland (keyboards, vocals), Bill Kreutzman (drums), Mickey Hart (drums, percussion)
I was playing the Dead's Dave's Picks 20 on this evening and heard them playing Little Red Rooster  from December 1981. That version isn't on You Tube but this slightly earlier performance has the same line-up of the band. They played the song over 250 times between 1980 and 1995 but didn't make a studio version.
Like the previous LOTD The Red Rooster  (as the title appeared on the label) is a Howlin' Wolf single attributed to arranger and double bassist Willie Dixon, although the song had been in his repertoire before being produced by Willie Dixon in 1961. It is one of only two records on which the Wolf plays slide guitar, a key element of the song, just as Brian Jones' bottleneck guitar was in the Rolling Stones 1964 recording of the song. Their version became a number one record in the UK and continues to be the only blues song to reach the top of the British chart.
Charley Patton was a major inspiration to Howlin' Wolf and he had recorded a version of this traditional song, whose theme is derived from folklore. Another antecedent appears in a song of similar name by Memphis Minnie.
