Still standing.....

History is vague concerning the 'Old Mill' as its affectionaly known round the town. It started out as a grain store possibly round 1932 or even earlier. The Tutton business had moved from the saleyards to Edward Street and, after two brief partnerships in the Archer and Simplex mills, Mr A J Tutton added height to his grain store, imported machinery from Australia and commenced milling.

It was a traditional industry surviving the depression years but by the outbreak of war in 1939, Tutton's flour mill, Luisetti's Grain and Seed Merchants, Cam Dairy Factory, Archer's Flourmill, a small mill at the Southbrook railway station and one or two small engineering workshops were all that remained of Rangiora's industrial past.

Although the earthquakes since September 2010 have closed many buildings the 'Old Mill' with its broken windows still stands today, not closed or cordened off but used for storage. The other building on the left is the Rangiora railway station - you can imagine this being a hive of industry with the huge grain silos, the mill and the railway back in its time.

The new cellphone tower is new, quite new and most annoying, however its all progress - love the little bit of greenery from the New Zealand Cabbage tree :)
