Jam and Jerusalem

I have spent the day at a big WI meeting today, a gathering of Women’s Institute members from all over Surrey. There was lots to see, people to meet and excellent speakers to entertain us. Traders are invited to these meetings and they bring tempting things for us to buy. Country Markets, formerly WI Markets, had a stall and as always there was a wide selection of jams and marmalades. It was a very good day.
“Jam and Jerusalem” is a journalist’s way of summing up the WI. See extra for Jerusalem. Jam is associated with the WI because during the Second World War the WI was issued with extra sugar rations which enabled them to set up schemes all over the country to make jam out of produce that would otherwise go to waste. Many tons of jam were made by WI members at that time.
