When temperatures dip below freezing the fountains in the City Park mirror pool stay off (for reasons I've previously illustrated). This can lead to the paved area seeming a bit bleak in winter, although in summer the piazza can be very effective.

To fill the gap of the absent pool the lasers fixed to the top of the tall pylons that surround the pool are sometimes used to paint patterns across the surface. Tonight they were making circles. The patterns are very mobile, and youngsters were having fun chasing the shapes across the pool, ensuring that the sense of play brought into the city centre by the mirror pool and the fountains can be retained even on cold days when the water is absent.

A year ago today, the fountains were on.
