Gills

Another fairly miserable day, with the best weather in the morning, when I was preparing for a visit to Molly, which involved baking a lemon and blueberry drizzle cake, and drafting some letters for her to approve and sign. Chris and Lizzy joined us, and we had a good visit, despite the fact that she had another chest infection.

It was pouring with rain by the time we arrived home, so no chance for outdoor photography. Pete dashed into the garden to bring me a log and a fungus to examine - once again we added a new species to the garden - the terrestrial flatworm Microplanna terrestris which was on the base of a Shaggy Pholiota toadstool.

It wasn't the most photogenic of creatures, so my blip today shows an extreme macro of the fungus gills. It seems appropriate to celebrate what may be the best fungus year this decade. Pete took me out into the wet garden to show me some other fungal discoveries he'd made - a couple of very large Shaggy Parasol and a group of Horse Mushrooms - both very common species but ones which we've never seen in the garden prior to this year.
