A view from Jeanneb

Alnwick Colour

It may be mono Monday but I like colour which is why I’ve chosen this blip at the entrance to Alnwick Castle grounds and gardens.
We didn’t visit either as we have been before and the castle gate had a notice saying Open Spring 2020! It had closed on the 27th, just yesterday and there were lots of disappointed families turning away. One went to speak to a man in the kiosk, I didn’t hear what was said but he came away saying he was ‘Jobsworth’ and telling his son that that is an example of how not to speak to people! Lots of people going into the Alnwick Garden on another lovely blue sky day but it was chilly as there was a hard frost first thing and I had my gloves on for the first time this season.
We found somewhere for a coffee after a wander around and then headed down to the pretty coastal town of Alnmouth.
I love the view of this place from the train and always look out for it. We had a walk on the beach and then as it was only 12.00pm we headed up the coast to Craster to walk to Dunstanburgh Castle. It’s very popular and we only just managed to park as this is half term week and very busy.
We did part of the 4 mile walk on our last visit but didn’t quite get to the castle so this time we decided to go all the way and go in. The weather had clouded up a bit but it was a good walk and there were great views both up and down the coast. We could clearly see Bamburgh Castle up the coast standing out in the sunshine. That was the aim of the Earl of Lancaster who built Dunstanburgh in the 14 th century to thumb his name at his cousin Edward 11 (I think!) at Bamburgh.
Found a cafe in the village when we got back and had tea and cake and got ‘smoked’ as the famous Craster smokehouse was in action next door.
Finally, following the Coastal Route we headed down for an amble around Amble. The new Harbour village on the Marina, it’s on the Coquet estuary, is apparently quite controversial with locals. Lots of little retail units as well as fancy new apartments. It will be interesting to hear how well they do.
Returned to our hotel as the sun set and the car pinged to tell us it was 4 degrees. Another frosty morning maybe to come but if the sun comes with it we don't mind!
Extra: Intersting decorations at the entrance to the gardens.
