Rememberance Service at the War Memorial

We walked into town for the Remembrance Day parade and service. A good crowd and a moving service in brilliant autumn sunshine.

There's been some controversy over the memorial over the past couple of weeks. The Council proposed moving it as part of plans to redevelop the area with lots of flats. There was massive and frenzied opposition to moving the memorial and to the size and scale of the flats that were proposed. I happen to think there could have been a much more reasoned debate about the location of the memorial. It's hardly in an accessible position hemmed in on all sides by busy main roads and it is rarely visited because of its situation. It certainly is not a place for quiet reflection either.

It was chilli for lunch with Doreen as we were going out to Canterbury this evening to see Scottish folk rock group Skerryvore. What a performance, a heady mixture of rocking piping, punchy tunes and melodic songs. Not everyone’s cup of tea I’m sure but we liked them. We bought their latest CD which was signed by the band who came out to meet the audience afterwards.

In between service and concert, I went to the allotment for the plot holder bonfire where we were able to dispose of any combustible materials. Once the roaring inferno had taken hold we were able to burn no end of less combustible stuff such as old brassica stalks, recently cut raspberry canes and some unidentifiable vegetative matter.
