Book of Kells

No I'm not in Trinity Library but you guessed it, Ballydehob!  Back for an Irish lesson - oooooofffff- and a quick wander around in the sunshine. This mural has been here forever and depicts an illustration from the Book of Kells (I think). The Book of Kells is the most astonishing thing ever - should you find yourself in Dublin it is worth the huge queues and fierce cost of the ticket to see it because it is utterly gobsmacking. Basically it is the Four Gospels, written in Latin sometime in the early 9C probably; possibly in Iona and when that was raided by Vikings brought to Kells in County Meath, Ireland. What makes it so astonishing is the artistry  - full of exuberant images, humorous details and sheer beauty.
Take a look.

Arthouse and chips later - tonight we have a Colombian film: Birds of Passage - an odd and perfect blend of folk cinema and gangster Iliad. From the trailer viewed last week, it looks visually stunning if heavy. I'll report back.
