Frosted heather

Heather is amazingly robust and withstands freezing temperatures. Researchers have discovered a plant hormone called brassinosteroids that helps increase frost resistance by modifying gene expression as temperatures drop. This reduces growth, which increases the plant's chance of survival. Actually, it signals to the plant to change its fatty acid composition, effectively stocking up on “winter fat” on the molecular level. Aren't plants clever!
