Ebbing Light

I've come to love working with the last drops of light at the end of the day, especially, as with today, when there's a beautiful red glow. Rather than point the camera at the sun, which I do from time to time, I like to find things that are illuminated by the light.

I played around with this bent over ice-covered reed supporting a few icicles. At first I had the camera positioned to side light the reed and, although it was a nice shot, the icicles were, as usual, white. But just changing my perspective slightly created this wonderful backlight that really made them glow.

I kept the background dark to really show off the colour and I like how the curved path of the reed follows the shape of the rock. The mix of textures, contrasting smooth ice with rough rock, also appeals to me.
