Norwegian nisse

Europe has St. Nicholas, United States and Canada have Santa Claus and
Norway and Scandinavia have Nisse.

The Nisse lives in the forests and on the farms taking care of the animals. They are like small gnomes with long bears and red knitted hats.  If you treat them well like giving them porridge, they will be kind, or else they are up to mischief and even the crop will fail and the animals get sick.

Nisse has been a part of the Norwegian culture and tradition before Christianity. Nisse came to play a part in our Christmas traditions from the 1800s.
