Bridge 29W - Llangollen Branch

We went for a walk across the Pontcysllte aqueduct today along with what seems like everyone else in the area. Kwdiane photographed the aqueduct itself so I opted to go for another Shropshire Union Canal bridge.

This is bridge 29W which isn't on the main part of the canal but at the end of Trevor basin. The initial plan was for the canal to carry on towards Wrexham and then directly to Chester thus providing a more direct route between the Severn and Dee for the Ellesmere Canal Company. However, this would have required many locks, a very long tunnel or a series of boat lifts and the cost proved prohibitive.

The canal here terminates in a twin-armed  quay (behind me) and there used to be a tramway and later a railway here connecting to the quarries at Ruabon.
