Winners and Losers

I am being ruthless about getting rid of the books on my shelves that make me feel worthy rather than immersed, and the very many that remind me of the brilliant career I never had in gender and development (I had the right qualifications and the right experience just as that area of work was taking off but I missed out, irony of ironies, because I was pregnant).

But this book, despite having the worst cover design I have ever seen, is a keeper. It is not possible to part with a book whose first sentence is: 'There were Africans in Britain before the English came here.' Yeah!

(Went to see 'Knives Out'. An evening very well spent.)
