A Day In The Life

Northern Flicker

We visited the little pond today to check up on the mallard duck couple, hoping to see little ones. Sadly, we didn’t see them. Perhaps something happened and they moved? We’ll check on them again soon. On a MUCH happier note, I saw this Northern Flicker which is part of the woodpecker family. I’m thrilled - it’s my first sighting ever. I “think” it’s a yellow-shafted female but more research is needed. These woodpeckers summer in Maine and migrate south for the winter months. They frequently feed on the ground, eating mostly ants and insects. I also spotted a red-winged blackbird, another first! I hope you’ve enjoyed your day as much as I have. Be well.
